Up until now, Intel has always manufactured its processors using its own facilities. A new deal announced today will see Intel team up with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to develop and produce low-cost Atom processors for use in consumer electronic devices. Intel won't be transferring its manufacturing process to TSMC, but the foundry will get to make Atom chips for use in products such as cell phones, set-top boxes and cameras. One of the apparent reasons Intel has opted to partner with TSMC is this regard is due to the fact that it doesn't posses the in-house technology required to open new markets as quickly as it would like. The move sees Intel join many other TSMC collaborators including both NVIDIA and ATI.
