IBM Firmware Update Causes Issues With Seagate Drives

Category: Storage / Hard Drives
Posted: 02:41PM

Seagate just can't seem to catch a break as of late. IBM has confirmed that a recent firmware update to its xServer and BladeCenter servers is causing issues with Seagate  Barracuda ES.2 hard drives. Clients are finding that when these servers are powered on, the Seagate hard drives do not start up. Seagate claims that these drives are more than capable of being used in business-critical sites, however IBM is pointing at the hard drives firmware. Apparently the firmware in the hard drives allows the event log pointer to be set to an invalid location on the hard drive, causing the drives to be unresponsive and effectively unusable. There is currently no fix for the issue, but IBM plans to fix the issue in the next firmware update which will come at the end of March. In the meantime IBM is recommending that owners of these effected servers avoid power cycles. This puts the crunch on any organization or business currently using these servers as mission critical devices.
