If you are over 70 and not too good on your feet, would using the Nintendo Wii Fit balance board help prevent you falling? That is the question researchers at the Unversity of Aberdeen and NHS Grampian want to answer, as they are looking for elderly volunteers who have fallen at least once in the past year to take part in regular sessions with the popular gaming accessory. The research will look at the effect of gentle exercises using the balance board, with the aim of reducing the number of falls experienced and therefore improve quality of life. A large number (90%) of hip fractures are due to falls, along with being the most common cause of accidental death for those aged 75 and over. Reducing the number of falls would obviously be beneficial (to the health system as well as to patients), though the idea of Grannies all over the UK wobbling around trying to ski down virtual slopes or head virtual footballs is somewhat amusing (to me, anyway).
