Seagate announced today announced new enterprise-class hard drives that will be offered in capacities up to 2TB. The new Constellation family of drives are intended for near-line storage applications and will be offered in 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch models. Both models spin at 7,200RPM in a choice of either SATA 3.0 Gb/s or the new SAS 2.0 interface running at 6Gb/s. The Constellation 2.5 inch drives come in either 160GB and 500GB capacities. The 3.5-inch Constellation ES hard drive will be available in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities. Seagate is billing the Constellation ES as the world's only 7,200 RPM 3.5inch 2TB drive. Western Digital launched its own 2TB drive last week for the desktop market but, since it's part of the Caviar Green family, it spins at somewhere less than 7,200RPM. Seagate says it expects to begin shipping the Constellation ES drive in the third quarter of this year but did not disclose pricing.
