AOL to Layoff Workforce

Because of the economy, as all the recent reports have been regarding layoffs, AOL will be dropping approximately ten percent of its workforce. While this number represents 700 employees of the company, it will also be eliminating merit-pay increases as well. AOL is blaming the layoff plans on the decrease in advertising that companies as a whole are making. It seems also that it is doing so bad, the company is even considering to sell its social networking site Bebo, which has just been recently acquired in a deal. Yahoo and Microsoft have been talking with AOL however and are collaborating on a possible advertising deal.

They blame the layoffs on lack of advertising? What do they expect, someone else to advertise for them? A lack of advertising would be due to the fact that THEY need to advertise, if that is truly to blame. Another thing that they could do better is stop offering a premium service that only works with dial-up natively. I used to work for AOL, it was a great company to work for, but I am sure that they struggle a lot for the fact that you have to "Bring Your Own Access", as they call it if you want broadband speeds, otherwise you are limited to dial-up. Most of my friends and family don't even have land based phone lines anymore anyway. If you look into all of the stuff that you can do with AOL aside from just using them as an ISP, they have some really awesome stuff.
