Rumors that began appearing earlier this month about the imminent release of Western Digital's 2TB drive had the release date wrong. However, WD did make it official today by issuing a press release touting the world's first 2TB disk drive. The new drive will be part of the company's Caviar Green family and makes use of perpendicular magnetic recording technology to achieve areal densities of 400Gb per square inch on its 500GB platters. The drives feature 32MB cache and are available now at a MSRP of $299US.
