Seagate 7200.11 drives are the subject of much discussion lately as owners are reporting an alarmingly high failure rate. According to Seagate, the cause of the failure can be traced to a bug in the firmware that can cause freeze ups or, in some cases, the drive to lock up when it is powered on. According the the Seagate support site, the drives affected by this problem are Barracuda 7200.11, DiamondMax 22 and Barracuda ES.2 SATA models manufactured through December 2008. Seagate had posted a firmware upgrade, version SD1A, but after some users found that the upgraded firmware actually bricked their drives during the update process, Seagate has since pulled the firmware upgrade from its support site. Right now it is recommended that you not upgrade your drive firmware until Seagate gets this whole mess sorted out. The data is not affected and still remains on the disk and now Seagate has announced it will offer free data recovery services through its in-house data recovery unit. Users should contact Seagate via the support site for help.
