At the risk of highlighting the obvious (we all know how new price premiums on new technology reduce over time), the introduction of the new 50nm process from Samsung and Elpida, due to enter mass production this month, should ensure that DDR3 becomes more affordable as the year progresses. Just as in smaller process sizes for CPUs, more dies produced from the same wafer means lower costs for manufacture and therefore lower costs for you, the consumer. Manufacturers switching processes should also lead to faster modules, with Elpida's 50nm process using copper interconnect technology, which gives a speed boost over the standard aluminum. Other memory manufacturers have plans to move to smaller processes as we ready for the launch of AMD's AM3 socket and Intel's Lynnfield.
