The National Safety Council is calling for a complete ban on cell phone use while driving. This goes beyond what some state laws that require the use of a hands free device when talking on a cell phone while driving. The group equates cell phone use to drunken driving claiming to raises the risk of having an accident forurfold. The safety group claims that using a handsfree device is just as risky as talking on a handheld phone and that talking on a phone takes your eyes and mind off the road. Not surprisingly, the cellphone industry objects to a total ban saying that there are instances where being able to make a phone call while driving actually increases safety and that users "can sensibly and safely use a cellphone to make a brief call".
