An international consortium of timekeepers announced today that an extra second will be tacked on to the end of 2008 just before 00:00GMT on New Year's Eve. The Earth's rotation has been slowing slightly and, to compensate for that, leap seconds have been added every now and then since 1972. This is the first leap second since December 31, 2005 and due to the leap year, this will be the longest year since 1992.
