Both Western Digital and Seagate are the most popular and well known hard drive manufacturers in the computer market. Both produce magnetic disk drives as well, instead of the upcoming solid state drives. Western Digital, though, is now considering the market value in these new drives and thinking in terms of low-end and high-end. The low-end that the company is considering is the market for SSDs used in consumer handheld devices, such as phones. The high-end market consists of SSDs that are aimed at performance applications, where the drives exceed the $200 price range. The hard drive maker currently sees an opportunity to benefit from the new drives, but is being cautious about the switch until SSDs are guaranteed to be profitable.
