Samsung announced today its new 256GB solid state drive (SSD) is now in full production with performance numbers that are nearly double that of it its previous 64GB and 128GB models. The new SSDs narrow the read/write performance differential to about 10% and boast sequential read/write speeds of 220MB/s and 200MB/s respectively. The erase cycle performance has also been improved. At these kinds of speeds you can store 25 high definition movies of 10GB each in 21 minutes. In comparison, a 7,200rpm traditional hard drive would take around 70 minutes. Pricing and availability were not disclosed.
