Today AMD launched its first 45-nm processor with the release of the 'Shanghai' quad-core Opterons. As these processors are intended for dual- and quad-socket server applications, many enthusiasts have wondered when the desktop variants of the new processors will arrive. Formerly referred to using the 'Deneb' code name, AMD has said the new 45-nm Phenom II X4 desktop processors will launch at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. The Phenom II X4 will be part of the Dragon enthusiast platform (just as the Barcelona/Phenom chips were part of the Spider platform). AMD coughed up a few details including the cache size is 8MB and will use either DDR2 or DDR3 memory.
