After the announcement of the new Core i7 processors that are set to come out in the next week, Intel has announced new Xeon processors based on the same Nehalem microarchitecture. This announcement from Intel comes on the same day that AMD announced its new 45nm Opteron processors. The Xeon CPUs will come in the new 5500 and 3500 series and each will provide multiple speeds to accommodate various server environments. Intel stated that the new units are slated for release sometime in the first quarter of 2009. The company also plans to discontinue seven of its notebook CPUs, starting in January of next year, including the Core 2 Duo Extreme X7900 and X7800, as well as the Core 2 Duo T7800 and L7700.
