AMD is putting some focus on the capability and processing power available from its GPUs by releasing a new version of its stream software development kit, along with some additions due in the 8.12 version Catalyst driver (due in December). That driver release will include the launch of a new Avivo video converter tool that, much like similar software available for NVIDIA cards, will provide greater performance then relying on CPU power. AMD is claiming that a HD video that would usually take 3 hours to convert will take a mere 12 minutes using a HD 4850 card. The 8.12 driver release should also see a bump in Folding@Home performance. With applications such as the latest version of Adobe's Photoshop supporting GPU acceleration it is good to see both major card companies putting some serious support behind exploiting the processing potential of their products.
