AMD will release its latest Opteron quad-core CPUs today. Code named Shanghai, the new chips are manufactured on a 45-nm process. AMD is hoping to recover from the problems that plagued th 65-nm Barcelona chips and was careful to involve it's OEM partners early on in the testing of the latest Opterons. These first round of 45-nm chips are aimed at the 2- and 4-way server market. The Shanghai processors will feature faster clock speeds, increased L3 cache and lower power requirements at idle compared to the previous Barcelona quad-cores. AMD is also emphasizing the virtualization capabilities of the Shanghai claiming a 25 percent faster switching time from one virtual machine to another. Analysts are seeing this as a solid offering that will hold up well against Intel in the server market, although it's more of a product to keep AMD in the game until its 6-core Istanbul processors release sometime toward the end of next year. AMD has only said it expects to release 45-nm processors for the single-socket server and desktop markets sometime in 2009.
