New technology developed by flash memory maker SanDisk could lead to faster solid sate disk (SSD) random write times. SSDs are faster than most hard drives when it comes to random reads but random writes can prove problematic in terms of speed. The new flash file system developed by SanDisk show the potential for boosting random write speed by a factor of 100. The secret is in a page-based algorithm that writes sectors of data to the most efficient location on the drive. Not only does this provide faster write seeds it also improves the endurance of the drive. The new system is called ExtremeFFS and will appear in SanDisk products beginning in 2009.
