In an ongoing effort to cut costs, Dell employees are being asked to take some time off - without pay. In a memo from Michael Dell, employees were asked to make the sacrifice in order to cut costs and to help avert any additional layoffs. In May of last year, Dell announced it would be reducing headcount by 10 percent and the company says it has met the target. Dell has taken additional measures to cut costs by freezing new hires, eliminating contract workers and offering severance packages to induce employees to leave in an effort to further reduce headcount. However, in the face of a slowing economy and a 17 percent reduction in earnings, Dell is offering employees up to five days of unpaid leave in an effort to avoid any additional layoffs.
