State Department Reports Possible Passport Information Theft
The State Department announced last Friday that around 400 people may have been exposed to identity theft after a security breach of its record system. Possible stolen items such as passport applications with personal information including Social Security numbers may have been illegally accessed. Sean McCormack, spokesman for the department, said that more people may be notified as the investigation goes on, but that most of those contacted already have not been victimized by identity theft. Most of the passport applicants, of the total 383 of them that were notified, live in the Washington, D.C. area and are being offered one year of free credit monitoring to verify that no illegal activities take place.
