When Google announced the Android mobile software platform, it said it would be offered under a developer friendly open source license. It is now following through on that claim, announcing the availability of the Android source code for anyone who might be interested in playing with it. As we know from experience of a certain web browser, open source can lead to some nice upsides and ultimately a successful and quickly evolving platform. It also opens up the possibilities of Android being put to use in unusual ways or on devices it wasn't originally intended for.
