Time was the name Cray was synonymous with the term 'supercomputer'. Just mentioning that term conjures up images of room-sized computers with miles of cabling and special cooling arrangements. Cray make not be the power house it once was, but the company has joined forces with Microsoft and Intel to deliver a desktop supercomputer. You read that correctly, I said 'desktop'. The new computer, dubbed the CX1, was designed from the ground up to address the high performance computing needs of smaller companies who don't have the wherewithal to purchase a bigger machine, but need greater computing power than a typical high-end workstation or server can deliver. The CX1 makes use of Microsoft Windows HPC Server 2008 and Intel processors. The CX1 can be configures with up to 8 nodes and 16 Intel Xeon processors in either dual- or quad-core configurations. This marks the first time Cray has used Intel processors. Each node can have up to 64GB of memory for a whopping 4TB total of internal storage. The Cray CX1 starts at $25,000 but can be custom configured with additional features which can run the price tag to over $60K, still a bargain in the pricey world of supercomputers. Another neat feature is the CX1 is equipped with an active noise reduction system to make it truly able to run on a desktop.
