Those of you with an interest in high end personal audio will probably be familiar with Ultimate Ears, a privately held company that produces in ear monitors (IEMs) for professional musicians and sound engineers, as well as models targetted at enthusiasts. Logitech today announced it will be purchasing the company for $34 million in cash, a deal which should close in August providing everything goes smoothly. So it seems that Logitech has ambitions on the personal audio market and is prepared to invest to grab itself a slice of the action. The company took much the same approach with home media streaming devices when it purchased Slim Devices (who produced the widely acclaimed Squeezbox) back in 2006. I would imagine Logitech will want to retain the Ultimate Ears name (and the reputation that comes with it) in much in the same way.
