Virgin Galactic Unveil WhiteKnightTwo Carrier
Virgin Galatic, the service which aims to give (rich) people a taste of space unveiled its WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft today. The craft, which has been named 'EVE' after Richard Branson's mother, clocks in with a wingspan of 140 feet, making it the largest all carbon-composite aircraft ever made. It will have the job of carrying the SpaceShipTwo craft (which has not yet been built) to a drop altitude of around 48,000 feet, with SpaceShipTwo then taking its six passengers to 65 miles above the Earth. Apparently the WhiteKnightTwo craft could be adopted for other uses apart from supporting sub-orbital space travel, such as satellite launching or deploying unmanned aerial vehicles.
