Laser harps have been around for a while so building one may not be something new to some folks. Unless, of course, you build one and mod it to use as a controller to play Guitar Hero. That's what Stephen Hobley did using a single 450mw green laser. By splitting the laser into multiple beams using a mirror, Hobley is able to produce sounds using a PC to interpret hand movements (that deflect the laser beams) into sounds. The coolest aspect of the whole setup may be the script Hobley wrote that maps the sounds to keyboard controls for the Guitar Hero video game. The site linked above also has a video of Hobley playing Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird in the video game. You can head over to his site if you want to pick up a set of plans to build your own.
