The virtual world of Second Life has gained another use; foreign education. Several universities, as well as the U.S. Department of State, have set up virtual campuses in Second Life, open to any and all who care to visit, and the response throughout the world has been favorable. Students at Dubai Women's College in the United Arab Emirates "used Second Life to virtually meet and practice English with Korean students, visit Darfur, and make a pilgrimage to Mecca." All these things would normally cost a lot of money and time, but Second Life allows students across the globe to learn about other cultures without the usual costs of such ventures. I have never tried Second Life myself, but the more I keep hearing about it, the more I'm tempted to give it a try.
