The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, better known as ICANN, opened its annual meeting today in Paris. Attended by more than 1,300 delegates from over 130 countries, the body is set to vote this week on whether or not to open up the addressing system used to assign top-level domains to Internet to country names and other well-known identifiers such as .com and .net, the proposal would open up the system to names registered by individuals or companies seeking their own corner of the Internet. Additional, the new names could move away from the English based version we have today to allow domains to be written in Cyrillic, Arabic or Asian languages. According to ICANN, any string of letters can be registered as a domain name, subject to a review process. No pricing has been set yet but is expected to be several thousand dollars and individual must provide a business plan and technical capacity before getting approval.
