As the price/performance ratio of SSD's continues to improve to the benefit of the consumer, traditional hard drive makers are feeling the heat, and Western Digital is ready to put up a fight. WD is developing a Raptor drive that spins at 20k RPM, 2x the rate of its current Raptor and VelociRaptor drives - and like the VelociRaptor, the 20k Raptor will actually be a 2.5" hard drive in a 3.5" enclosure to help cool the super-fast hard drive. In addition to the enclosure's heat dissipating properties, expect it to also serve as a silencer of sorts, as WD is claiming that these drives will be totally quiet. No launch date or pricing info is available at this time.
