In 2001, Borders abandoned its online business, turning over its web operations to Amazon.  As of today, Borders.com no longer redirects to an Amazon-controlled web portal.  Borders doesn't feel it can out do Amazon, but it does think it can provide a compelling experience.  In addition, it can offer some extras that Amazon can not, such as supporting the Borders Rewards loyalty program and having orders shipped to Borders stores, free of charge.  Borders expects the site to be independently profitable in 2009, but only time will tell if this turns out to be a good move in the long run.
