ATI announced this week it will use the latest version of GDDR memory in its upcoming line of new graphics cards. The new memory, GDDR5, provides higher bandwidth, up to 5 times that of GDDR3, according to ATI. Memory maker Qimonda confirmed it has been working closely with ATI on supplying the new memory chips and said it is currently producing and shipping GDDR5 modules to ATI. ATI also said it is working with other suppliers, including Samsung and Hynix, to ensure a reliable and steady source for the modules. Meanwhile, NVIDIA is taking a more cautious wait-and-see approach by saying it might use GDDR5 in its new cards if the market called for it.
