The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organization today unveiled a prototype of its latest attempt at producing low-cost computing for poor students worldwide. Dubbed the XO 2.0, the unit is much smaller than the original XO, which might prove to be too big and heavy for students who might be walking miles to get to school. Nicholas Negroponte, founder of OLPC, disclosed plans for the new device at MIT and said it could be produced for $75. The original XO was intended to be a $100 unit, but actual prices are $188 today. The XO2 will sport a touch screen keyboard that doubles as a second screen that will allow the laptop to be opened and used like a book. The first XO2 laptops are expected to be ready by 2010.
