Cutting-edge DRAM and Flash memory manufacturer Corsair has just released the findings of a study it conducted to determine the real-world impact of running 2GB RAM vs. 4GB RAM in a gaming system, and the results may surprise you.  The 4GB system really put a beat-down on the system equipped with only 2GB memory, showing a 46% frames-per-second increase in many popular games - including Crysis, shortened application load times, and improved multi-tasking performance - and the vast overall performance increase can be irrefutably linked to higher user productivity and a better gaming experience.  This test was performed on a system running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit, but I need to mention that I have 4GB RAM installed and am running Vista Ultimate 32-bit, and can say with confidence that the performance increase is equally noticeable.  Corsair offers 4GB kits of its Dominator and XMS memory at many e- and retail locations.

Company of Heros seemed to be the only game that really had a good increase in performance. That and task switching. But this isn't anything new. If you are running software that is using less that the amount of system memory you have available, increasing memory does very little to performance. Only if you're really close or over your available memory will you see any difference. Plus if you're using 64bit windows and running 32bit apps like most are, you end up using more memory to do the same thing. With 32bit windows, 1GB may be enough. Exact same software on 64bit windows could end up using more than 1GB of memory and therefore you'll see performance problems. I'm assuming these games are all 32bit. I'd be interested in seeing the same tests performed on 32bit windows. Of course a company that sells memory is going to promote that people upgrade to more memory. Although prices as they are, it is a good time for it. They were right about that part.

I am using Vista HP 64-bit with 64-bit Crysis. I could really use 2 more gigs.
