Fire at Lite-On factory could prove problematic for PC industry

Reuters - A recent fire in one of Lite-Ons Chinese factories could prove to be a problem for consumers of Lite-On based monitors, their partners partners are expected to bit hit the hardest in the first and second quarters of 2008. Dell, HP, and Lenovo who are close partners with Lite-On rely on approximately 20% of their monitors to be sourced from Lite-On. The fire caused $71.2 million in damages which include structural damage, inventory damage and equipment damage, fortunately no one was hurt in the incident. The fire is believed to have been started by an electrical line short circuiting. Lite-On has stated that 14 LCD monitor production lines have also been interrupted. To me it appears that there will be a rise in monitor prices this year and possibly into early 2009, whether it will be a gradual rise in price or a steep and abrupt spike in monitor prices only time can tell.
