Information Week - In an attempt to stop illegally copied software, Microsoft has filed 52 lawsuits against businesses and individuals in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Italy, Ireland, and several other countries, for pirated versions of Windows, Office, and other products. An additional 22 cases have been referred to local law enforcement authorities in foreign countries, said Microsoft. Fifteen of the involved cases are said to be traced to the Chinese syndicate, one of the world's largest rings of counterfeiters according to the software giant. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Microsoft in a joint effort busted the gang earlier this year. Microsoft estimates that counterfeiting costs the software industry about $40 billion per year worldwide.
