eWeek -

IBM announced today that it has developed a high-k metal gate manufacturing process that puts it one step closer to producing the first of its 32nm microprocessors.  The new technology is necessary to reduce the the power leakage of transistors as the transistors become smaller. IBM is partnering with AMD, Chartered Semiconductor, Freescale, Inifineon and Samsung in developing the new technology.  IBM expects the new semi-conductors based on the 32nm process to be available in the second half of 2009.  The new technology will allow for chips that are 50 percent smaller than the previous 45nm process while  reducing power consumption by 45 percent.
