Today Google announced an open-development platform for mobile devices that could shake the wireless market up. The new platform, dubbed Android, has been developed by Google and backed by industry heavyweights like T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm and Motorola. The open-source platform will feature a complete set of components, with a operating system, middleware stack, customizable user interface and applications. "Our vision is that the powerful platform we're unveiling will power thousands of different phone models." Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt said in a statement. The platform should be available in the second half of 2008.
