c|net - When the MacBook Pro's current flex cable power supply was introduced, it was well received as making MacBooks safer. When subjected to extreme stress (e.g. when you trip over the cord), the cord would detach from the computer and stop the MacBook from flying across the room. Of course, now users are discovering the downside to the power supply. On many of them, the cables are fraying after repeated use, causing them to spark and smoke. Many consumers are getting 85-watt MagSafe power supplies with thicker cords to replace their initial power supplies, and it is rumored that Apple is preparing to ship these heftier power supplies out to all MacBook Pro customers in the near future.
