Designing Monstermod
Well , It all started while I was searhing for computer parts, So I can build my first computer. And I notice that computer part mfgs., there motherboard and video card , on there boxes ,There be monsters, creatures and denoms.Well , That is a idea. I ordered the computer parts and start sculpting, MONSTERMOD
Making a Monstermod
Teeth and eyes
Before I start sculpting ,I make my monster teeth , Well its a little easy for me because I work in a Dental lab . I've been dental lab tech. 14 years .I enjoy making monster teeth .Teeth to me make the monster.
I mix up some dental tooth acrylic and make fangs. After I form the fangs, I put them in a pressure pot for 10 mim. at 90 degree water. Then I took the teeth out of the pressure pot and started finishing the teeth with a tool called, a dental lathe, using burs and sanding drum, after finishing ,Pumice is next using a rag wheel and wet pumice . And this removes all scratches from the acrylic.Time for polishing . Using a polishing compound and a buff rag wheel this make the teeth shine.
Now, Time for a wax up 2 arches a upper and lower mounting on a articulator . Setting the teeth in wax you can sooth the wax out with a brush wheel (B20). Process the upper and lower I use Lab putty (silcone putty or polysiloxane base). Mixing up putty with activator ,1 mim. work time pressing all over the teeth and not the bottom demold in about 4 mim. This is a lost wax process boil the wax off ,leaving the acrylic teeth in putty mold
With a eye dropper, drop some dental monomer in the mold than Sprinkle some pink dental acrylic in the mold ,it will soke up the monomer. More monomer more pink acrylic ,untill the mold is fill ,pressure pot for 10 mim. This process is call A Salt and Pepper Denture. You can pumice and polish or paint.
Eyes I order taxidermery VanDyke's Lion eyes 27mm
Sculpting
Well , I sculpt some type of life cast . On my table lay a support wire, Now, hand full of plaster ,on top of the wire . Freehand a type of face . After setup wiring it up on my sculpting table and spraying a
clear sealer on the life cast .
Taking the eyes spacing them about 5 inches. apart ,setting them in dental acrylic ,on a flat surface.
Laying clay using Roma Plastilina no.2 . Building up with ropes and ball of clay ,Have basic face , then place eyes and teeth and sculpting starts, useing tools, brushs, and rubbing alcohol. Then when I get the look I wanted ,I took it off the sculpting table and angle the right side of the face with plaster. And back to the sculpting table.Building up with ropes and ball of clay again on the plaster and adding jaw bone and ear start doing detail . I also did fingers ,I only sculpted one finger cast it 8 time . I sculpted the one finger with a dental acrylic finger nail. The face and finger finished .Time to mold .
Molding
I do alot of molds ,Home and at work . And I want my my molds to look good . To make this mold I used a Rubbermate bowl .Im molding the sculpture, in a up side down bowl . Cutting a hole in the bottom of the bowl now being the top. Using the lid as a base and it seals tight, the silicone doesn't leak out The first thing I do with the bowl , Put some plaster on the table lay lid on it ,Because the lid as a indention in it needs to be fill ,so it will support the sculpture . The sculpture laying on the lid ,I used krean clay to seal the bottom . A clay sealer is put on I use Alcone Plastic cap material ,To me this is the best sealer. The bowl insides is block out with krean clay. the clay press in the coner_ where silicone is not needed .Teeth ,tongue and finger are sealed and molded the same way ,But with smaller bowls.
Mixing silicone 10 part to 100 parts using Polytek 70-25, a mixing small batch (one cup). I brush on the first part , Silicone is flowing to the lid's seal.Putting the the top ,sealing the lid . The silicone will gel in about 40mim.Then I mixed up big batch and pour it . Curing in 16 hours .Demolding ,I took it out of the rubbermate bowl and replace it with a bigger bowl. I placed the silicome mold on the lid and put the top on . Mixed up some Ultracal 30 ,pour the mothermold first half way and in 30 mim poured the other half so I can have two part mothermold ,For easy demold.Demolding is quick ,easy ,and clean . Making the die cast mold . Demold remove the glass eyes from the sculpture , mold is clean ,I roll out a flat plate of klean clay ,1/4 of a in. thick . Covering everything ,But not the mouth and eyes. I form a mouth socket and eye socket in the clay . Sealing the clay and mix up batch of silicone . This batch is thick and brush on 1/4 of a in.concaved. 16 hours ultracal30 is into the silicone , I form a bridge using ultracal30 ,to support die mold, at each end, there mold keys .Demolding, clay come out clean , and ready for casting.
Casting
To me casting is fun and easy , My mold are cured , I fill my mold with water and put the die mold in place and overflow. The water left in the mold is measure in 2 jars Aand B ,1 to 1 mix .Im using R1 FAST CAST. Mix pour demold 15 mim. Fingers cast it 8 time. And a tongue.
Painting
Lite sanding and remove small bubbles and flash round the eyes and mouth. I used a spray a primer. And I use Testors model enamel paint ,Red ,Brown , white ,black .Mixing shades of paint and thin down with paint thinner for the air brush .The air brush I use is paasche model H.After I air brush I do a dry rub.
Finishing
Laying the eyes one at a time and sealing back's of them with dental acrylic.Teeth are done the same way and a acrylic build up on the lower ,for the tongue.
The computer
There is 2 sides to a computer, that is right side and left side .The right holes in motherboard ,The left side your door .This is why the monster is looking to the left. I took the door off and the in side of the door is measure 11 by 11 ,and made the marks . Cutting the door window ,I used a jig saw with a small tooth blade ,first I drill holes on each corner to start the blade .BE CAREFUL and IT IS LOUD. After cutting the window out , I drill 4 screw holes in each corner.
Having 2 pieces of plexeglass 12 by 12, 1 being 1/4 of a inch. and 2 being 1/8 of a inch. thick . Marks for ,4 screw holes to match window . Outside of the window screw the 1/8 plexeglass on to the window. Drill small hole in the middle and using Dremel tool, with crosscut bur cut out a star pattern . Now used a heat gun,and melt this star fold over and close to the border .Plexeglass , cools down quick .I screw the inside window 1/4 plexeglass .
The monster
Make marks for the top center of the window . Drill a small hole in the plexeglass and a smaller hole in top and bottom back of the monster rim. Then screw in place , and drill the bottom hole in the plexeglass, going to the monster, and screw in place.
The fingers , There are 4 fingers on each side .I predrill a hole in each finger and drill holes in the plexeglass a inch. a part . Screw in place.
Put the door back on to the computer ,Done !!!! A Monstermod

nice to see some hollywood style FX happenin at home ;) You might look at a job in previz / modelling in cinema.. A slight red glow back behind the monser inside would really add a nice touch to this...
